A truly memorable evening was enjoyed by the AHEPA Midlands Chapter as it welcomed the distinguished historian Professor Maria Efthymiou for an exceptional lecture on modern Greek history, attended by more than 150 guests, in the University of Nottingham, UK.
The President of the AHEPA Midlands Chapter, Dr Charalampos Kotidis, opened the event by presenting the vision and objectives of the newly established branch, while inviting members of the local community to support its future activities and philanthropic mission. Professor Sotirios Korosis then formally welcomed Professor Efthymiou and highlighted her significant academic contribution to the study and understanding of Greek history.
Professor Efthymiou captivated the audience for more than two and a half hours through her unique storytelling, engaging humour, and insightful analysis of the divisions, struggles, and defining moments that shaped modern Greece, from the years preceding the Greek War of Independence through to contemporary times.
Remarkably, even an unexpected fire alarm interruption could not diminish the enthusiasm of the audience. The lecture continued in a different theatre, where attendees eagerly followed Professor Efthymiou’s presentation for a further thirty minutes—a testament to her extraordinary ability to educate, inspire, and engage.
The evening concluded with a dinner hosted jointly by the AHEPA Midlands Chapter Committee and the Nottingham Greek School Committee, providing an opportunity for guests to continue discussions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The AHEPA Midlands Chapter extends its sincere gratitude to Professor Efthymiou for sharing her knowledge and passion, and to all those who attended and supported this special event. The overwhelming response and participation demonstrated the strong interest of the community in Greek history, culture, and educational initiatives.
